outreach programs
Able have two distinct programmes for schools:
Arts Awards and Engagement
arts awards.
These are geared towards young people with barriers to learning. Able are accredited to offer awards from Trinity College London. These range from Discover (a non assessed level) through Explore (externally assessed pre GCSE level) to Bronze and Silver (GCSE equivalents) and Gold (GCE A’ Level equivalent.)
Typically we deliver to young people in the age range 14 – 20.
In a first (non-binding) meeting with teaching staff and students, we will determine the appropriate level based upon student capabilities and time available. Following this, a costed proposal can be produced.
Students are then encouraged and supported in engaging in a variety of artistic activities, including digital arts as appropriate. Able then manage the assessment and moderation process. Typically this would include radio production, film making, animation etc.
engagement.
This programme is geared towards mainstream students.
It serves to raise aspirations and increase engagement with education. Previous participants have gone on to further education, and in one case returned to work for Able!
Participants are taught to plan and make a radio show for broadcast. They are then set the challenge of making a second show that is more heavily speech based which they must research, script, arrange interviews for etc.
The topic of this second show can either be selected by the school if there is a certain message they wish to get across, or by the students themselves.
Previous topics have included sports, mental health, local history, exam stress and many others.
